Catwoman is a much-beloved DC Comics character originally from the 'Batman' world. She's been portrayed time and again, and each time, we see something new. That 'new' could be awesome or just make us wince...a lot. Either way, here are all the ladies who donned that sexy, black Catwoman suit. In 1966, Julie Newmar (to the left) was tapped to play the first-ever live-action Catwoman for the Adam West-starred T.V. show. She was featured in 12 episodes in seasons 1 and 2, but was unavailable for further projects due to scheduling conflicts.
Newmar's costume was fashioned after a green catsuit that was appearing in the comics at the time. The costume also had a mask similar to the one Lee Meriwether is wearing in the picture below.
With Newmar unavailable, Lee Meriwether (pictured right) took up the role of Catwoman in the 1966 feature film 'Batman'; which started production directly after the first season of the successful show.
In 1968, the legendary Eartha Kitt appeared as the masked villain in the third and final season of 'Batman'.
Her costume was similar to (if not the same) as Julie Newmar and Lee Meriwether's, as they were all portraying the same character in the same cast and storyline.
Michelle Pheiffer took up the mantle in the 1992 Tim Burton film 'Batman Returns'-starring Michael Keaton in the title role. Many fans feel that this was the most accurate portrayal to date.
Pheiffer's costume is still a stroke of genius. The half-crazy character she was playing surely would have stitched together some leather and made it work. Also, very creative.
Maggie Baird played Catwoman in the 2002 T.V. series 'Birds of Prey'. She only appeared in flashbacks, as the main story was about the Silver Age Huntress. In the storyline, Huntress was Catwoman and Batman's daughter.
Her costume design was based on Batman's costume from the 1989 Michael Keaton film, 'Batman'.
Hale Berry played a masked heroine hat wasn't even based on the D.C. character in the 2004 film 'Catwoman'. Although (apparently) the film alludes to prior 'Catwomen', the storyline and even the character's name had nothing to do with the revered heroine/villain.
We still don't know what her costume was based on. Your guess is as good as mine.
Here's a look at our newest leading lady, Anne Hathaway, who will be portraying both Catwoman and her alter-ego Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, 'The Dark Knight Rises'. The film is scheduled to be unleashed in theaters July 20, 2012.
Catwoman's costume is very true to the comic character currently in the comics. She's got the utility belt, the goggles (which flip up to become cat ears and a mask similar to Julie Newmar's) and lots of leather.
